Why do addicts find it easy to go back to their addiction

Posted on March 23, 2022

One of the most difficult challenges to defeat is becoming sober and staying that way. Several people go back to their addiction after being certified sober.

Usually, one of the reasons is because there are many factors responsible for this that people don’t pay attention to.

When someone completes addiction treatment, the tendency to relapse is still there even though it is not noticeable.

Hence, it is up to the individual to take proactive steps that would help them to keep addiction at bay when the cravings set in.

There are some coping strategies that can help addicts fight off the addiction triggers, but many of them do not know these hacks.

  1. Stress

Many addicts lack the knowledge and skills on how to treat stress. They are unaware that stress is one of the leading factors of addiction. And it is also one of the major reasons why some addicts relapse.

To keep stress in check, it is important to know what is causing it and provide a lasting solution.

Without the input of these tips, it would be difficult to handle stress. Hence, the individual who is still feeling a great deal of stress would most likely return to their addiction.

  1. Places or people that trigger addiction

Many recovering addicts need to know that their activities and the people they hang out with are responsible for their sobriety.

Therefore, staying around the same people or places who boosted your addiction, would most likely ignite a trigger that would make you reconsider going back.

To prevent relapsing via this route, it is important to avoid those people and places.

  1. Negative Emotions

Another issue that recovering addicts face is knowing how to handle their emotions when it becomes overwhelming.

Hence, some of them would return to their addiction because it helps them process their emotions. This means that they have not learned how to employ the coping strategies taught during addiction treatment.
